Sure Start Brierley Tops

Sure Start is the Government's programme to support to children and families through early education for all, more and better childcare and establishing programmes including children's centres, combining education, childcare, health and family services, while supporting parents as parents and in their aspirations towards employment, education and training.

Sure Start Brierley Tops is the local programme for Sutton (Central), Huthwaite and Stanton Hill. Our aim is to improve the health and well being of families and children, before and from birth, so children are ready to thrive when they go to school.

To achieve this we have 5 objectives. We have looked at each of the objectives with local parents who have told how they feel we can best achieve them. These are detailed below

Improving social and emotional development ....

Along with providing opportunities for children to develop, socially and emotionally, we also provide

Improving health

We provide good information on health and have widen choice by providing practical support including courses on cooking healthy options, as well as

  • Bumps and Babes Group

Improving the ability to learn

In addition to providing opportunities for children to meet Early Learning Goals for communication, language and literacy, our services include

  • Support for parent & toddler groups
  • Story Swap
  • Art/music focused sessions

Strengthening families and communities

We offer help and advice to families at times when extra support is needed. We provide

  • New Mums Information packs
  • Volunteering opportunities

Improving affordability and accessibility of childcare

23% of non-working parents mention lack of access to affordable childcare as a reason for not working. We improve awareness of childcare options so parents can make informed choices, we also

  • Promote take-up of childcare grants
  • Support local childcare providers
  • Have built a network of childminders
