The Foundation stage curriculum
The six areas of learning are:
- Personal, social and emotional development
- Communication language and literacy
- Mathematical development
- Knowledge and understanding of the world
- Physical development
- Creative development
These are delivered through a Highscope approach. This is based on active learning and the belief that children should be encouraged from an early age, to make informed decisions, to solve their own problems, and to be responsible for their own world.
This is facilitated in the following ways:
- Organising the workspace so that it is logical and interesting.
- Labelling equipment clearly so that children can be independent.
- Carefully planned adult participation.
- Shared control between children and adults.
- A curriculum based upon the children planning, doing and reviewing their own work.
- A structured daily routine.
The daily routine morning and afternoon sessions:
9.00 - 9.10 (12.50 - 1.00) Welcome time.
9.10 - 9.45 (1.00 - 1.35) Small group time.
9.45 - 10.55 (1.35 - 2.45) Work time
10.55 (2.45) Hooter time - give 5 minute warning to tidy time.
11.00 (2.50) Sorting Songs - tidy time
11.10 - 11.30 (3.00 - 3.20) Recall time, milk and fruit, together time (song, story or poem).
Record keeping:
Children's development is carefully monitored during their time in nursery. Records are kept in the six areas of learning.
An assessment of children's vocabulary level is also carried out when they have settled into nursery. Parents find this useful if they want to help their child at home to develop their language skills.
All developmental records are made available for parents / carers to browse through and contribute to at any time.
How can parents help their children?
- Take an interest in their child's work in nursery.
- Talk to your child about what they would like to do each day in nursery (planning).
- Listen to your child when they are telling you about what they have achieved at nursery (reviewing).
- Adding your positive comments to your child's leaf on the 'growing tree',
- Try to find time to look at your child's 'special book' on a regular basis.
The nursery offers target teaching groups for older children who are in their last term, to prepare them for reception class. There is an induction programme for children entering Carsic Primary School.
